YROA YNOT Trip to Kawerau

Leaving Wairoa in the early hours Friday 22 July 2016 we traveled through the Waiokea Gorge and along the beautiful  Bay of Plenty coastlines.  We arrived to Rautahi Marae in Kawerau at around 10:45am after a quick breakfast stop in Whakatane and were immediately greeted by some of the KYC (Kawerau Youth Council). The kuia/kaumatua of the marae welcomed us onto the marae and gave a whakamarama on the signifcance of the marae, it's makers, carvings, and  history within the community.

Following a yummy morning tea we entered into a Mau Rakau workshop and whakawhanaungatanga session so everyone could get a chance to know each other.

We visited local attractions and youth spots whilst on our weekend in Kawerau such as the Ron Hardie Rec Centre, Skate and Basketball park as well as had a dip in the free local hot pools and natural mineral pools called the Savage Hot Pools.

On Saturday we were able to participate in the KYC's Health Expo Day, there was lots of entertainment and interesting stalls with lots of goodies up for grabs. The youth of Kawerau seemed to have an amazing day. The evening ended with some rollerblading fun then wananga debrief of the day/week and other topics.

Sunday was the day to travel back home after poroporoaki and quick kai stop in Whakatane.
