Rangatahi E Tu 2009-2011

YROA YNOT together with the Mahia Hauora held a two day holiday programme with Rangatahi from Mahia and Nuhaka. It was a jammed packed programme with a Ki-O-Rahi workshop, double decker healthy sandwiches and Underwater rugby.

The first day was spent learning how to prepare some healthy food from garden to table, followed by an afternoon learning how to play Ki-O-Rahi and Poi Whenua.

The next day our group headed into Wairoa to participate in the Wairoa Community Centre's school holiday programme. It was a good opportunity for our rural Rangatahi to mix and mingle with our Rangatahi from town and utilise the awesome facilities at the centre. the YROA YNOT supported the day by providing an Underwater rugby workshop with the Rangatahi. Carmody Little, Natasha Roberts, Laurencene Mulligan-Hill and Ngari Keefe helped facilitate the workshop by teaching the Rangatahi the basics of snorkelling and then how to play underwater rugby. It's good to see the crew able to pass on their skills to the younger generation, everybody learns from it. The benefits to participants include increased fitness, improved snorkelling techniques and better water safety awareness. We hope to build the sport within the community and establish an Underwater Sports Club.
