Te Au o Tangaroa - August 2010
Te Au O Tangaroa is a programme that teaches our community customary fishing practices. Grace Ormond facilitated the programme on behalf of Te Whare Wananga o Awanuiorangi.
Out of the programme, students gain a national certificate in Seafood Maori (Customary Fishing) Level 3. The programme included a pool session, where the youth were able to learn snorkeling techniques within a controlled, fun environment. Keen local spearfishermen Desmond Smith and Nolan Maru mentored the group by helping them with techniques, setting goals and motivating them to get into the aquatic environment.
