About Y-ROA Y-NOT
September 2009 was when it all began – YROA YNOT was launched by the Wairoa District Council with the aim of handing back some community responsibility to our youth through leadership, events, sport and recreation.
It has since emerged as the cornerstone organisation for youth involvement in the Wairoa community.
We are supported by funding from the Ministry of Youth Development, although the governance group of our youth, aged between 12 and 24, has demonstrated a strong commitment to undertaking its own fundraising. This money has largely come from within the community and without a doubt goes straight back in.
Through events, education and mentoring, youth who would otherwise be headed for a grim future have thrived as a direct result of involvement in YROA YNOT. Fostering engagement from our youth is no easy task, but this crew has gone above and beyond expectations to take ownership of their responsibilities. The number of people who turn up to any event with a connection to YROA YNOT is testimony to this.
Message From MOIRA BARBER, WDC Youth Facilitator
Moira believes that the youth of Wairoa are our future. They make up a significant part of our community. They have the same rights as everyone else, especially to be heard, to be included, to be protected and to live fulfilling lives. Young people offer high levels of energy and ability and frequently make positive contributions to the Wairoa district.
Globalisation, new technologies and associated social change are challenging and altering all aspects of society within single generations. Successfully adjusting to change and harnessing the opportunities it brings requires new approaches and attitudes. Innovation, creativity and the resiliency to endure change have become the critical determinants for future prosperity and are linked to good youth development.
We need to encourage positive initiatives that support youth and their development with a view to young people being successful.
